Exterior Description And Setting

Middle of a group of five three-storey/ two-bay terraced houses fronting south side of Sandys Street. Pitched artificial slate roof with cement rendered chimney at left. Semicircular metal rainwater goods to facade with down pipe to right (shared with no 20). Rear pitch has plastic rainwater goods with downpipe to right. Walls of street façade painted and line render, with raised eaves course and raised painted base course. Main entrance, at right comprises a modern four-panel stained timber door with narrow transom light over. No bracketed entablature. At left is a single 1/1 sliding sash window with exposed box. There are three irregularly spaced identical window openings at first and second floors; the right-hand ones are in line with door, and the top floor ones are diminished in height. All openings have stop-end chamfered reveals. The windows have granite cills. Left and right gables are party walls with adjoining properties (HB 16/28/104D, /104B respectively). Rear wall is painted and wet dashed in cement. A two storey return abuts left bay. Ground floor opening of main block not visible (access denied). First floor bay at right and each second floor bay has a 2/2 sliding sash window, all with granite cills. Return has natural slate hipped roof with skylight to left pitch. Two 2/2 sliding sash windows to first floor of back wall. Yard is enclosed to rear by two-storey random rubble outhouse.

Historical Information

This building is shown on the 1835 OS town map. The first valuation book notes its occupier in 1838 as one John McKee. It is described in the 1863 second valuation has being 18ft 9in long by 22ft 6in wide by three storeys high. Evaluation

One in a group of five three-storey/ two-bay terraced houses fronting south side of Sandys Street. Front elevation retains most original featurest, although the replacement roof and loss of front door and entablature detracts from overall integrity. Conservation area protection is more appropriate in this case.
