Exterior Description And Setting

This building is currently undergoing a refurbishment scheme. A three-storey/ two-bay terraced house fronting the south side of Sandys Street. Pitched natural slate roof with tiled verge at right, and a rendered chimney (with projecting cap) to each gable. Skewed plan form with right gable not at right angles to façade. Half-round metal rainwater goods with downpipe to left; rainwater goods to rear pitch are plastic. Walls of street façade are painted line render with stepped stucco quoins at each end. Front door at right has six fielded panels and is of painted timber with narrow transom light over. At left are two 2/2 sliding sash windows with exposed boxes. There are three identical windows at first and at second floors, in line with ground floor openings; those on top floor diminished in height. All windows have granite cills. Right gable abutted by a lower building (HB16/28/102D). Exposed section of wall had lined render. Left gable is abutted by no.18 (HB16/28/107). Wall of rear elevation is rendered. A two storey return abuts at left. It has a monopitched natural slate roof and cement rendered walls. There is a 2/2 sliding sash window to every floor at right; also an identical window at top floor centre and another over return, on half landing between first and second floors.

Historical Information

This building is shown on the 1835 OS town map. The first Valuation book notes its occupier in 1838 as one James O’Neill. It is described in the 1863 second valuation has being 21ft 9in long by 23ft 0in wide by three storeys high. A three-storey/ two-bay terraced house fronting the south side of Sandys Street. One of the earlier buildings in Sandys Street and still retaining all original features to front and rear elevations. However, the interior has been radically altered, which affects its importance.
