Exterior Description And Setting

Two storey / three bay house set in a terrace and facing the sea on Osborne Promenade. Pitched natural slate roof with unpainted rendered (shared) chimney to either end of ridge. Front pitch of roof has two small reproduction wall-head dormers with pitched natural slate roofs, plain bargeboards, painted timber cheeks and pairs of side hung casement windows to front. Half round plastic rainwater goods. Front elevation faces SW and is lined rendered and painted with stepped stucco quoins to right end only. All front openings have run moulded stucco architraves and windows have painted granite cills. Central bay has a pair of three panelled storm doors with fielded panels and brass knobs. Over is a semicircular headed fanlight with original peacock-tail glazing. Bays to left and right each have a single exposed box 1/1 sliding sash window. Three similar windows to first floor (one to each bay). Left gable is abutted by adjoining building 9 Osborne Promenade (HB16/12/003B). Rear elevation was not inspected. Right gable is abutted by adjoining building 7 Osborne Promenade (HB16/12/023B). To the right side of the NE façade there is a mono pitched single storey return; this has a modern door and window. To the centre of the ground floor is a modern (12 paned) glazed door. Either side is a modern replacement top hung window frame. Setting: Small area to front of house is enclosed by a small chamfered dwarf wall supporting modern slender railings with spearhead finials. Matching front gate.

Evaluation

An attractive house set within a much altered terrace, retaining its sash windows, door and natural slate roof. The retention of these features enhances its character and appearance.
