Exterior Description And Setting

Semi-detached pair of picturesque, Domestic Revival style Edwardian houses of c.1900, now one property and with large 1990s extension to the rear. The building is set to the W side of the Village Lane, N of the main road running through Bryansford. The front (E) façade is symmetrical. To the far left is a decorative lean-to open porch whose tiled roof is a continuation of the pitch of the main roof. The porch roof is supported on timber posts with decorative pierced brackets. The posts rise from a rubble base with sandstone coping. This a short timber balustrade stretches between the out and respondent posts. The porch roof has a slight overhang with plain barges and in the ‘half-tympanum’ between the roof and the main wall of the house there is what appears to be timber framing with plaster mouldings set in between. Within the porch is timber sheeted doorway with bevelled sandstone dressings. To the right of the porch is are twinned windows with Edwardian looking timber frames with top openers. The windows are red sandstone dressed and rest on a similar sandstone cill course. Directly above this window is a small, hipped roof, half-dormer with single window much as before only much smaller. The right hand half of the front façade is as the left hand side only handed and with the doorway within the porch blocked up with similar rubble as the façade. The front façade is in dark fieldstone rubble with rock faced granite quoins. The S gable has a single ground floor window as front with a broader window to the first floor with frame similar in style to before but whose design looks modern. To the apex of this gable is in brick, above a course of sandstone. The N gable has a similar arrangement except that the upper window has a three light casement frame and that the apex of the gable has a moulding similar to that to on the porches. To the rear there is a large full height gabled return which was added c.1998. This has a rendered façade, tiled roof and modern style windows and doors. The exposed left hand section of the rear has a glazed door to the ground floor with brick dressings with a small sash window to the right of this. The exposed section of the main rear façade to the far right has a timber sheeted door with brick dressings. The roof of the original section is tiled with a slight overhang with plain barges. Decorative ridge tiles with gable finials. There is a tall Tudoresque chimney stack. Cast iron rw goods to original house, with square guttering and shaped guttering.

Historical Information

This building probably began life as a pair of dwellings for workers connected with the Roden Estate, and was probably built in c.1900. Prior to this the site was taken up with a longer row of dwellings which are shown on the 1834 and 1859 OS maps. The dwellings may have been amalgamated in c.1950 for around this date a (now demolished) extension was added to the rear. The present extension was added c.1997-98.

Edwardian Domestic Revival style dwelling of c.1900 with tiled roof, rubble and sandstone façade, tall Tudoresque chimney and decorative porches and hipped roof dormers. The property began life as a two properties (possibly estate workers’ houses), which were amalgamated in perhaps c.1950s. A large modern extension was added to the rear in 1997-98.
