Exterior Description And Setting

One of a pair of, picturesque, two storey semi-detached houses of 1907, with gabled dormers and open porches. The house is set on the NW of the main road running through Bryansford village. The front (SE) façade is symmetrical. To the ground floor centre is a gabled open porch, with timber supporting piers rising from low rendered wall to the gabled roof with overhang, (mildly) decorative barges, tie beam and finial. With the porch is a modern timber and glazed door. To the left of the porch is a relatively large tripartite sash window with moulded in/out surround. To the right of the porch is a similar window. To the first floor are two gabled half-dormers with barges, tie beams and finials as porch. Within each is a relatively small sash window with vertical glazing bars (2 panes over 2). The W gable is blank. The roof overhangs to this gable and has a tie beam and finial as porch. To the left at the rear is a large modern, part two, part single storey, flat roofed extension, which cuts into the original roof pitch. To the right of this is a modern, single storey, flat roofed garage extension. The front façade and gable are finished in lined and painted render with bevelled quoins. The rear façade and extensions are finished in unpainted rough cast. There is a granite panel high to the right of the front façade which reads ‘Wyllie Cottages 1907’. The roof is covered in natural slate. Two rendered chimney stacks. The stack to the NE (shared with No.15) appears to have been rebuilt recently. Cast iron and PVC rw goods. Low rendered wall enclosing small garden to front.

This house is one of a pair built in 1907 for workers within the Roden Estate, with this particular house believed to have originally been home to Lord Roden’s coachman/chauffeur. The property was acquired from the estate by the present owner’s aunt in 1948.

Picturesque, two storey, semi-detached house, with gabled dormers and open porches, one of a pair built in 1907. The rear is now dominated by a modern, two storey flat roofed extension, and a modern garage.
