The present late-Georgian style residence was built between 1834 and mid-1836, as it is not shown on the first edition OS map of that year but is recorded in the valuation of July 1836. It appears to have been built by Robert Hastings, whose family had held land in this vicinity from at least 1752. It is likely that the new building succeeded an earlier (possibly single-storey) dwelling, which thereafter may have been demoted to the status of an outbuilding, though this is not certain. There seems to be no known architect associated with the design of the 1830s house, and it is probable that, like many other similar farmhouses of this style / era, it was the work of a skilled local builder. The abovementioned 1836 valuation notes the building as a ‘new house not on [the OS] map’ measuring 50ft x 32 x 23, with an extensive collection of outbuildings of 73 x 23 x 9, 73 x 22 x 8, 47 x 13 x 6, 84 x 18½ x 8, and 112 x 20 x 7 – the last two of which were thatched. Robert Hastings died in 1879, and the property was either sold or passed to Robert Brown. In the 1901 census, Mr. Brown, a 38yr unmarried farmer, is recorded as living here with his older sister, Jane Ellen Brown, a young nephew, Robert James Brown, and a domestic servant, Mary Magorrin. The three members of the Brown family were still in residence at the time of the 1911 census, with a farm labourer, Patrick Craig, as well as two domestic servants, William Dougherty and Annie Donnan also within the household. Robert Brown, who in the 1920s served as a member of Down County Council, died in 1937. By 1947 the Struell House was in the hands of Adam J. Kelly by 1947, who was still here in 1975. It has changed ownership on at least one occasion since then.
