Exterior Description And Setting

A telephone kiosk of K6 type, manufactured in cast-iron, with small-paned sides and door, glazed with perspex and a shallow domed roof. It stands in front of a former railway arch on the main street of the village.

Historical Information

An example of the K6 or 'Jubilee' telephone kiosk, originally designed in 1935 by the English architect Giles Gilbert Scott, which came into production in 1936 when the type was first introduced across the United Kingdom. Precise date of installation in Carnlough not known. The roof design is based on Sir John Soane's mausoleum. This particular kiosk can be dated to sometime before 1953, as the 'Tudor' crown motif it possesses was dropped in favour of St. Edward's crown following the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
