Exterior Description And Setting

A two storey three bay house in coursed basalt located on rising ground at the base of Binevenagh and looking north west across sand hills.Slate roof and four chimneys. Glazed door in centre, recessed in wall with architrave and small projecting hood supported on two scroll mouldings. Canted bay windows to ground floor of bays flanking door, modern joinery in brick arch openings. Three no eight pane sash windows aligning above, with brick jambs, lintels and stone cill. Gable walls rendered. That to the south west revealing a double pile arrangement to the kitchen return and french windows to front room, a small casement and door to kitchen and two sash windows near the valley of the roofs. There is no roof overhang. The gable to the north east is blank but the return has a lean-to brick extension (1500mm deep approximately) with four 12 pane sash windows, (2 to each floor) facing north east. A door on the line of the main return sits between the house and extension 12 pane sash above. The rear of the kitchen is hard against the slope of the mountain. There are two windows at high level. Aligning with the house are the remains of outbuildings, the front wall in good condition, the backs ruinous and part demolished.

Historical Information

One of three seaside cottages built by landed gentry and described in the Ordnance Survey Memoirs of 1835. (The other two aligning were converted into one house HB02/09/022). This house is thought to have been enlarged circa 1844 by the Lane family (Historic Buildings records/Lady Tyler). It was bought and renovated by the present occupant ten years ago. Evaluation

A simple house in the late georgian manner. Neatly kept and nicely located. Important for its type, preservation, siting, and historical associations but also because of the elegant group made with the aligning HB02/09/022 next door.
