Exterior Description And Setting

A small two-storey gabled house forming the right hand end of a terrace of four houses which steps up a hill from left to right. Main entrance faces west. West elevation is three windows wide. Roof of Bangor Blue slates in regular courses with overhanging verges and eaves; dark toned ridge tiles; two chimneys, one on each gable, whitened, presumably constructed of brick, with projecting brick cornice; two stoneware pots to each chimney. Walling is rubble stonework limewashed and whitened; projecting eaves course with white painted wooden fascia; cast iron gutter with circular cast iron downpipe to left hand side. Windows rectangular timber sliding sash, vertically hung, with horns except first floor to right and ground floor to left which are without horns; all with exposed sash boxes, and all painted green; all 6 over 3 except right hand window to ground floor which is 2 over 2. Wooden lintel painted green; whitened reveals to sides; projecting concrete cills painted green. Doorway in centre of ground floor between two windows: rectangular timber ledged in recessed moulded and chamfered wooden surround; modern iron latch handle in traditional style; modern plain brass letterbox; artificial stone and concrete pavoirs to front doorstep, with rubble stone paved areas to each side bordered by concrete kerbing. North elevation: upper part of north gable visible above roof of adjoining house to north which steps downhill: walling as previous to entrance front. Set back to left, blank side wall of rear return; cement rendered finish smoother finish than previous, painted white; cast iron gutter and cast iron downpipe. East or rear elevation comprises two-storey rear wall of main block with a central projecting gabled return. Roofs slated as previous to entrance front. Walling of main block similar to entrance front but gable of return has smoother finish to render. To left of return, cast iron gutter; one window to each floor, detailed as previous to front, sashed 2 over 2, with horns, but head of upper window recessed while lower one has wooden lintel painted green. To right of return, cast iron gutter; two windows sashed as previous, each 1 over 1, with horns to ground floor but no horns to first floor. Gable of return has one window to each floor, as previous, set in recessed reveals with projecting cills, upper one sashed 1 over 1, with horns, lower one 2 over 2, with horns. South elevation comprises south gable to left with side of rear return set back to the right. Gable walling as previous to entrance facade; one small window to first floor, rectangular timber sliding sash, vertically hung, without horns. South side of rear return: two-storey; roof slated as main block; walling as previous to main block except smoother finish to render; cast iron gutter with circular cast iron downpipe to right hand side along with PVC soil pipe, painted green; two windows to first floor, rectangular sliding sash, vertically hung, 1 over 1, without horns; whitened reveals; projecting concrete cills painted green. Rectangular ledged timber door with glazed panel, set in moulded wooden frame, to left hand side of ground floor, with a pair of coupled windows to the right, each window sashed as to first floor, but with horns. Modern concrete paved area at door of rear return. Setting: the house stands on the east side of the main street in the village, facing directly on to the street, and situated at the top end of a short terrace which steps up the hill. There is a gravel driveway along the south gable bounded to the south by overgrowth on a steep bank. To the rear of the house is a grassed garden sunk below level of side driveway which is retained by a basalt rubble wall with basalt and limestone copings surmounted by a timber post and wire fence. Boundary of garden to north formed by timber palisade.

Appears on OS map of 1832. Functioned as a public house in the early part of this century. Restored in 1992-3 as a private dwelling by the Hearth housing association, who added the rear return. This is a house in a vernacular Georgian style, displaying the proportions and details associated with the style, and retaining the essence of its original exterior appearance and some of its original interior features. It enjoys a pleasant setting and, with the rest of the houses in the terrace, forms part of an attractive and important group which is of considerable local interest.
