Exterior Description And Setting

Small, plain, single fronted two storey terrace house of probable late 19th century construction, set on the east side of Main Street, Ballywalter. The asymmetric front elevation faces W and has a panelled timber door to the left with plain fanlight. To the right of this is a sash window with horizontal astragals (2/2). Two similar windows to first floor. At the rear there is large single storey lean to extension with modern windows and door, above this to the first floor of the main house there are two windows as front. The gabled roof is slated and has a brick chimneystack to S (shared with no.11). Cast iron rw goods. Facade rendered and painted.

Historical Information

A terrace is shown on the this site on the OS map of 1834. In 1837 the Ordnance Survey Memoirs Ballywalter was described as having ‘cottages all built of stone, and, with few exceptions, but 1 storey in height...many of them slated...plastered and whitewashed’. It is probable that this terrace was originally mainly one storey and that this house was either heightened, or newly built, in the mid to later 19th century.
