Exterior Description And Setting

Single storey /two bay lodge to Tamnaharry House, on E side of Derryleckagh Road. Pitched natural slate roof with over hanging eaves and trefoil tailed decorative bargeboards to each end gable, both with pointed timber finials. Tall modern brick chimney to rear pitch. Modern metal rainwater goods. Walls are cement dashed and painted. All windows are modern top hung timber casements and painted concrete cills. Principal elevation faces W and has a small gabled porch to right end, with pitched roof and bargeboard as main roof. Its doorway is now gone and it contains a window opening to front and one on left cheek. Modern door is to centre of remaining front wall with a window to either side. Left gable is abutted by modern single storey flat roofed return, which continues to rear abutting whole rear elevation, all of no interest. Right gable has a single window, and above in the gable is a decorative render cartouche with a crest. Delist/Relist 19th December 2001

Historical Information

The present Tamnaharry House (HB16/10/009) was constructed in the 1840s to designs by Thomas J. Duff of Newry for a Mr Reilly, on his marriage to heiress Harriet Hamilton (whose family had occupied an earlier house on the site). Reilly also had the grounds landscaped and employed Duff to design this lodge and the E lodge on Bridge Road (HB16/10/010). The associated gates (HB16/10/008B) were erected by a Dr Bradley, occupant of the house from 1896 to 1906, to replace the original timber ones. The first HMBB survey slide shows that they formerly abutted the left corner of the front elevation of the lodge. They have since been relocated to enable the lodge to become a separate property from the main house.
