Exterior Description And Setting

Relatively plain two storey terrace block of consisting of a public house which may date from c.1865-70, and dwelling house of perhaps c.1840. The terrace is set on the E side of the main road running through the small village of Kilmore, roughly a mile SW of Crossgar. The public house [No.11] is set to the N end of the terrace and is slightly taller than its neighbour, with the height difference made more pronounced by the rise in ground level to this end. The front façade faces roughly W and is symmetrical. To the left of centre on the ground floor is a timber sheeted double door with plain rectangular fanlight. To the left of this is a sash window with Georgian panes (6/6). To the right of the doorway is a similar sized window with margin panes and central horizontal glazing bar to top sash and etched glazing to the lower sash. To the right of this is a another doorway, as before, with another window to the right of this, as left. Above the central window / doorways is a traditional timber signboard. To the first floor are five windows, as that to far left on ground floor. To the first floor of the N gable there is a window, as first floor front, but much of this window is largely covered in ivy growth, as is much of the gable itself. To the right hand edge the gable is abutted by a tall rendered wall (removed 2004). To the left on the ground floor of the rear façade there is modern, utilitarian single storey extension with flat corrugated iron roof and small lean-to shed and timber sheeted door to N side. The extension stretches across to a large two storey, rubble-built, gabled outbuilding. To the left on the first floor of the main rear façade of the pub are two window openings, the 1st window is as first floor front, the 2nd is now boarded over. To far right is a timber sheeted door which is reached via a modern fire escape stair. The entire façade is rendered with the front and gable painted. The gabled roof is slated and there are two rendered chimney stacks. That to N is largely covered in ivy growth. Cast iron rw goods. The house (No.9) has a long front façade which follows the angle of the street. Documentary evidence suggests that the property was once two separate dwellings. Part of the ground floor (to the far left hand side) actually now belongs to the pub, but used to be integrated with the house. To the right of centre on the ground floor is a late Victorian style gabled porch with a panelled timber door to the N face with plain rectangular fanlight. The W and S faces large consist of a sash window, with horizontal glazing bars and margin panes, to each side. The porch roof is slated with plain barges and finial. To the left of the window are three sash windows with Georgian panes (6/6). To the right of the porch is a window, as porch. To the first floor are five windows as left on ground floor. The façade is rendered and painted and a large section of it is covered in thick ivy growth. From the rear one can see that the southern section of the house is actually double gabled, (though much of this rear gabled portion belongs to the properties to the S of the house- a block now somewhat modernised and containing apartments). To the N gable of this rear section has a modern window and glazed door to the ground floor and a windows, as front, to the first floor. To the E this section is abutted by a slightly lower two storey gabled wing- this also belongs to the apartments to the S (though originally it may have belonged to this property). To the rear façade of the main section of the house there are two windows to the first floor and one to the left on the ground floor, all as front. To the far right on the ground floor is a panelled door, which belongs to the pub (see above). The whole of the rear elevation is finished in unpainted rough cast. The gabled roof is slated and there are three rendered chimney stacks. Cast iron rw goods.

Historical Information

Though buildings are shown on this site on the OS map of 1834, the contemporary valuation records tell us that these were all single storey properties. The c.1863 valuation plan shows what appears to be the present stretch of terrace, though the plan (which includes later annotations) indicates that the public house may have been built after this date. In 1863 the dwelling house was in the hands of a Samuel Leay. The public house may date from the late 1860s, possibly built by a William Secy (or Seay) who is listed as the owner of both the pub and the dwelling house in the 1890s. In c.1900 the whole block (which included the village post office- contained within the pub building) was acquired by the Mason family. The dwelling house had a connecting doorway to the pub until c.1980, when the present owner blocked it up. Evaluation

Relatively plain two storey terrace block of consisting of a public house which may date from c.1865-70 and dwelling house of perhaps c.1840. There have been alterations to the rear of the public house, but the front facade of the whole block is largely intact and remains a good example of an unfussy mid to late 19th century village terrace.
