Exterior Description And Setting

Single storey 'semi-detached' vernacular house of possible pre 1834 construction, now with concrete pan tile roof and gabled return to rear. The property is set on the NE side of Church Street, Greyabbey. Entire house finished in unpainted roughcast render with pan tiles to the pitched roof. Two small rendered chimney stacks to main roof. PVC rw goods. The front (SW) elevation is asymmetrical and has a door to the far left with two widely spaced sash windows with Georgian panes to the right. The SE gable is blank. There is a return to the rear with modern timber windows made to resemble sash windows. Low, partly rendered rubble wall in front of houses.

Historical Information

There are buildings shown on this general site on the OS map of 1834, but it is difficult to tell whether they correspond exactly with the siting of the houses we see today. Thus, while it is possible that these houses originally date from the early nineteenth century (at least), it is difficult to be certain. Certainly their overall proportion suggests that they may belong to the large class of ‘ground floor’ houses in the village referred to in the OS Memoirs of c.1835.
