Exterior Description And Setting

Small, plain, two storey, single fronted terrace house of probable late 19th century construction. The property is set on the east side of Main Street, Ballywalter. The asymmetric front elevation faces roughly W and has a modern timber and glazed door to the right and a sash window, with horizontal astragals, to the left. Two similar windows to the first floor. To the left on the rear is a large full height gabled extension with a double sash window to the first floor. Sash window (as front) to ground and first floor right on main house. The gabled roof is slated and has a red brick chimney (shared with No.13). Cast iron rw goods. Facade rendered and painted.

Historical Information

A terrace is shown on the this site on the OS map of 1834. In 1837 the Ordnance Survey Memoirs Ballywalter was described as having ‘cottages all built of stone, and, with few exceptions, but 1 storey in height...many of them slated...plastered and whitewashed’. It is probable that this terrace was originally mainly one storey and that this house has neither been heightened, or newly built, in the later 19th century.
