Exterior Description And Setting

A square clock tower with battered blackstone base and sandstone quoins, with pyramidal copper roof. Walls of rubble basalt with sandstone quoins which rise in belfry stage to form circular corner pinnacles. Upper stage of tower comprised of regularly coursed rough faced sandstone: contains circular clock on each face with a triplet of louvred segmental headed openings in sandstone ashlar; moulded sandstone cornice between corner pinnacles, surmounted by steep pyramidal copper roof swept up to a copper weathervane finial. All four faces of the tower are identical except for a small rectangular doorway at the base of the east side and a plaque on the west side. Doorway deeply recessed in plain stone reveals with cement rendered step; panelled timber door. Plaque inscribed "Erected by the friends of the Revd Arthur H. Pakenham J.P. (of Langford Lodge) to commemorate his many acts of kindness and generosity. 1897". SETTING: The tower is built on a narrow wedge of ground forming a grassy bank between the main road leading over a railway bridge at the east end of the Main Street of the village, and a lower slip road leading into the railway yard. Low rubble basalt retaining wall to bank on north side, and mature hedges flanking tower on south side to form boundary along pavement and bridge.
