Exterior Description And Setting

A whitewashed rubble masonry post about 3.0 - 3.7m high of circular cross section, tapering to an oversailing conical top surmounted by a rounded boulder finial. A television aerial is now affixed to it.

Historical Information

Although not explicitly marked on Alexander Nimmo’s 1821 chart of Annalong Harbour, a line is shown to this location from the entrance channel to the harbour; it is captioned ‘landing mark SE ¾ by compass’. It very probably existed at this time, although the possibility cannot be excluded that the Board of Works erected it when carrying out harbour improvements in the 1840s. Primary Source: 1. A.
