Exterior Description And Setting

A cow tail closed head lever type pump with a plain spirally decorated column and a fluted cap with an acorn finial. The pump is prominently located beside a pyramidal structure at this road junction. The pyramid carries a cast iron plaque with the inscription "This fountain/free to all/the design and gift of/ John Carey 1860". During road alignment Cormac Scally of UFTM monitored the excavation which revealed a well underneath the pyramid.

Historical Information

The fountain is explicitly cited on the 1902 and 1921 OS 25 inch maps (PRONI Ref OS 10/1/42/15/1 and 2). It cannot be assumed that the plaque refers to the pump now insitu but could also be referring to an earlier pump or the well itself. It is believed that this is an early c20 pump drawing from the well.
