Exterior Description And Setting

A two-storey/ three-bay, east-facing house with extensions to left gable and rear. The natural slate roof is gabled and coped and has a squared granite rubble chimney on each gable. The walls are also of regularly coursed squared granite rubble, with some snecking. The east (front) elevation has a central entrance door of modern timber construction with six glazed panels. There is a window to left and to right, and three in line at first floor level. All are 6/6 sliding sash with granite cills. On the south gable elevation is a single storey flat roofed extension (also of squared granite rubble) with tripartite sliding sash windows to the ground floor east elevation and bay window and French window on its south-facing elevation. The first floor gable of the main block is cement rendered and has a 6/6 sliding sash window on the first floor. The north (rear) elevation faces onto an enclosed yard and has a two-storey flat roofed extension of similar construction and window style to the house. The north gable elevation is plain. The gardens consist of lawns, mature trees, shrubs and flowerbeds. The boundary to the road is modern rubble walling built when the road and Glasdrumman Bridge were widened. Entrance gates are wrought iron with dog bars, and hang from cast-iron posts with Gothic lancet panels and crocketted finials.

Historical Information

A building is shown here on the 1834 OS 6” map. It is explicitly captioned ‘Benavon House’ from the 1901 edition onwards. The father of the present occupant added the rear extension and rebuilt the left one in the mid 1950s. It is believed that the windows and interior were remodelled at the same time. Evaluation

An unpretentious symmetrical and well-proportioned country house with sympathetic additions. Although the interior has been tastefully refurbished, it is now of little architectural character. The house is enhanced by its mature gardens at front.
