Exterior Description And Setting

Single-storey four-bay vernacular dwelling with single-storey abutment to east gable wall, located at the junction of Eagralougher Road and Ballymagerny Road. Pitched tin roof with shallow projecting eaves and central red brick chimneystack. Walling is whitewashed lime-rendered mudwall and rubble stone. Principal elevation faces north with square-headed window openings and plain reveals containing timber windows. To third bay is a square-headed door opening with a slightly projecting red brick and rendered door surround and welsh slate canopy, containing timber sheeted door with cast-iron door furniture. East elevation is obscured by overgrown foliage but evidence of a corrugated-iron abutment can be seen to east gable wall. South elevation has three windows. Significant damage to walling of westernmost bay with evidence of repairs. West elevation shows red brick verge to gable. The house is set back from the road behind a garden and is bounded by a low masonry wall to the north and east with a wooden and steel-mesh fence to the south and west. Its rural

57, Eagralougher Road first appears on the OSNI First Edition map (1833) and the plan-form remains the same today. It appears on Griffith’s Valuation map (1862) and at this time the house and immediate land was owned and occupied by William Orr being valued at £1 and 5 shillings. From evidence within the property (such as newspapers and a calendar), this building appears to have been vacant since 1994 and has since fallen into a derelict state. References: Primary sources: 1. A pleasant single-storey pre-1833 vernacular dwelling located at the junction of Eagralougher Road and Ballymagerny Road, retaining some historic fabric, but having altered openings and windows of a later date. There is unsufficient evidence to justify listing on the grounds of special architectural and historic interest. The building is of local historic interest, and makes a valuable contribution to its rural setting.
