Exterior Description And Setting

Two storey three bay terraced shop (occupied 2018 by Barclays bank). To the left on the ground floor front (N) façade is a large modern shop front with large picture window, ATM, PVC signage, modern glazed door etc. To the right of this is an elliptical arch headed carriage entrance with timber sheeted double doors. To the first floor are three windows now with modern top hung frames made to resemble sash with Georgian panes. The façade is covered in lined painted render. No access to the rear. The roof is partly covered in Bangor blue slates. No chimney stacks. PVC rw goods.

This site is shown occupied on all maps of Newtownards from Colvill’s plan of 1720 onwards. Until fairly recently the present building had an ‘Ards’ doorway (to the centre), a traditional shop front (to the left) and an altogether early to mid 19th century appearance, but has been modernised [?c.1990]. Evaluation

Two storey terraced shop (with house) of probable early to mid 19th century construction. Major alterations to ground floor with modern shop front and interior. The building does not meet the test for listing. It retains however its original form, carriage arch and upper floor appearance (albeit with modern windows), and is of significant local interest making a valuable contribution to the streetscape.
