Exterior Description And Setting

Vernacular, but practically symmetrical, two-storey farmhouse of 1874, with two-storey outbuilding to one of the gable-ends. The building is sited at the head of a narrow driveway, approximately 150m south of the Cladymore road, 4km south of Markethill. The front east façade is almost symmetrical, with a centrally positioned, single-storey porch projection. The door opening is flat-headed and has a smooth render surround; the front door is missing. To either side there is a flat-headed window opening with smooth, shouldered and heeled, render surrounds and cut stone sills. Frames are painted timber sash 1/1. At first floor there are a further two windows, both as before; these are positioned directly above the ground floor openings. The south gable is mainly obscured by the attached outbuilding. To the rear (west) façade there are two windows each to ground and first floors; these are as before but are irregularly arranged. At first floor of the north gable there is a single window, as before. Walls are finished with dry dash render; corners have smooth render edges. The roof is pitched and slated, and has rendered skews to the north side only. Positioned on the ridge, there are three matching brick chimneystacks with corbelled caps and no pots. These is a corbelled eaves course and rainwater goods are uPVC. The attached outbuilding is two-storey with a gabled slated roof. To front there is a doorway to left on the ground floor, with a window to right, with the remains of a steel frame. Directly above this is a doorway with the remains of a timber-sheeted door. There is another upper level doorway to the rear façade. The ground floor was used as a byre; there was no access to the upper floor. The first floor structure is now supported on a modern RSJ (roller steel joist). To the north, there is corrugated-iron clad hay shed. To the east side of the front façade there is a collection of small outbuildings.

Historical Information

Although a collection of buildings is shown in this vicinity on the OS maps of 1835 and 1860, none match the size and orientation of the present two-storey house exactly. The valuations confirm this in terms of the size of the buildings, as all are recorded as single-storey in 1836, save for the ‘ruin’ of an ‘old bleach mill’ which at 13ft may have had a loft level. At this point the whole collection was in the hands of a Thomas McMurdy, but by 1863 they had passed to an Alexander McCullagh. In 1874 McCullagh would appear to have built the present house, for the rateable valuation rises from £1-15-0 to £3-15-0. The house remained in McCullagh family hands until at least 1972, a Joseph MCullagh listed as the owner in that year. References- Primary sources 1 PRONI VAL1A/2/21 OS map, Co. Evaluation

This mid to late Victorian house 2 storey house retains its original vernacular layout and a considerable amount of its exterior and interior detailing. However due to its state of delapidation it is not sufficiently intact to consider listing. This survey is a useful historical record.
