Exterior Description And Setting

Two and half storey/ two-bay kiln, facing north to corn and threshing mills (HB16/05/021E) and associated with other industrial buildings on this site (HB16/05/021A, C, D). Roof is gone but seems to have been pitched and slated. Walls are of squared and snecked granite rubble, laid in courses, with brick header course to eaves. On front elevation, left bay (which contained the drying floor) is longer and that to right (a grain store) has a gable to facade. Left bay has a small cill-less window to right at ground floor and to top floor centre is a similar window with iron bars inset. Right bay has a central doorway with timber lintel at ground floor with similar to each upper floor. First and second floor doors are t+g sheeted and flanked to left and right by small brick-dressed windows with bars over. In gable over the top floor door head is a hoist. Left gable is blank. Rear wall advances slightly to ground floor right, and has a single window to top floor right. Otherwise blank. Right gable has, at top floor centre, a blind brick-dressed window (larger than those to front elevation). It is abutted at ground floor left by a brick lean-to, the slate roof of which has collapsed. There is a 2x5 pane metal window in front wall and t+g sheeted door and small blocked up window in left (north) cheek. Right cheek is blank.

Probably erected in 1846 at same time as associated corn mill. In use until 1950s. Sources: 1. PRONI – D 1201/23/27. (1853 encumbered estates rental notice for the lower half-townland of Ballymogart [sic]). 2. HMBB file notes by F.W. Hamond dated 4 Dec 1987.
