Exterior Description And Setting

A rectangular plan barn church aligned east-west with a square tower and rear extension. The pitched roof has concrete tiles with projecting granite copings and finials on the front apex and wall heads. The east (entrance) elevation is of finely-dressed granite blocks set in regular courses with stepped ashlar quoins. It has a semicircular-headed entrance with a similarly headed window recess above and to either side, all trimmed with smoothly dressed granite. Each window recess contains a set of paired lancet windows with a glazed panel in the spandrel. A datestone in the gable reads ‘1840’. A two-stage tower abuts, and projects from, the east elevation at left. It is of similar construction and also has stepped quoins. There are two small semicircular-headed top-hung metal-framed windows at the bottom, beneath which is a foundation stone dated 1962. Above is a single window similar to those on the main façade. Above this window is a circular clock face. The upper stage is delineated by a projecting stringcourse and contains a pair of tall semicircular louvered openings with eyebrow hood mouldings. The tower terminates in crenellated parapets with corner finials, behind which is a flat roof with flagpole. The north elevation of the nave is cement rendered and contains four semicircular-headed windows and a modern panelled door to right. The west elevation, which is that of a recent extension dating from 1986, has a number of semicircular-headed top hung windows at two levels and a central door. At front, right side and rear is a graveyard. A granite block boundary wall coped with rusticated granite separates the grounds from the roads on two sides.

Historical Information

Original Presbyterian meeting house erected 1840-42. Gallery added 1861. Foundation stone of tower laid 1962 and opened the following year. Named the Pyper Memorial tower named after the church’s minister from 1910 to 1945. Stained glass windows (of Christ) added 1978. Rear extension (known as the Cunningham extension after the father of its sponsor) added 1986. Major renovations to the interior, including insertion of the vestibule screen, carried out in 1989.
