Exterior Description And Setting

Cast iron cylinder freestandingVictorian post box located at rear of pavement near to boundary of Police Barracks at end of access to St Lucia Barracks site. ainted red with flat dome top and black plinth.'VR' monogram to front. Plinth displays makers mark: A.HANDYSIDE & Co Ltd DERBY & LONDON. Setting At rear of pavement on junction of access to St Lucia Barracks and . Dwarf wall behind appears to be remains of old wall but with modern reconstituted stone in section parallel to main road.

Historical Information

Manufactured to a standard design in the reign of Queen Victoria(1837-1901) and installed in its current position during the same period. The boxes have been in use since 1852, just twelve years after the introduction of the first adhesive postage stamps and uniform penny post. Pillar boxes began to be standardised after 1859 and the lower aperture appeared after 1879. After 1887, the imperial cipher of Victoria Regina appeared on all new boxes. Secondary Sources: 1.
