Exterior Description And Setting

An asymmetrical direct-entry single-storey, three-bay rubblestone dwelling with thatch under tin roof and associated outbuildings; built c.1830 and accessed via a laneway to the east of Brone Park, northeast of Garvagh. Rectangular plan with outshot to west. Pitched corrugated tin over partial straw thatch roof. Plastic rainwater goods. Walling is random rubblestone with cement render at east; cement rendered brick to south gable. Remnants of timber and metal window frames in plain reveals with projecting concrete sills. The principal elevation faces east and is four windows wide with entrance to left of centre (door missing). Enlarged window opening with remnants of metal frame to far left. The south gable is blank. The west (rear) elevation has out-shot to right, with two metal framed window openings; left bay has timber framed window to centre. The north gable is blank; partially abutted by ruin of former rubblestone byre. Setting: Situated in an unspoiled rural
setting to the east side of Brone Park, accessed via an earth lane and surrounded by farmland. Single-storey rubblestone outbuildings to north with corrugated tin roofs; one forming linear group with house has wide opening to east formed in red-brick and red brick eaves course; internal walls are partially whitewashed. Detached outbuilding further north has cement rendered bricks to southwest corner. Site enclosed by metal railings to south. Historical Information

A building is shown on the site on the first edition OS map of 1832 and a second structure, most likely an outbuilding, was added to the north east between the second and third editions of 1849-53 and 1904-5. Griffith’s Valuation (1856-64) records the building as the residence of Samuel Alexander, a house and offices valued at £1.10s and situated on a farm of over 22 acres. The farm was leased from George Alexander. In 1876 the farm passed to the Lynd family, Andrew, then his widow Hannah (1886)(Letters of administration of the personal estate of Andrew Lynd died 22nd November 1882) followed by their son James (1919). At the time of the 1901 census, widow Hannah Lynd was living at the farm with her two sons and two daughters, one of whom was working as a dressmaker. The five-room, 2nd class house is recorded as thatched in both 1901 and 1911 censuses. The building currently lies derelict. References: Primary Sources 1. Evaluation

An asymmetrical direct-entry single-storey, three-bay rubblestone dwelling with thatch under tin roof and associated outbuildings; built c.1830 and situated via a laneway to the east of Brone Park northeast of Garvagh. This modest thatched dwelling, no longer in use, partially retains an original roof structure. The building has lost much historic fabric and detailing and if not of sufficient interest to consider listing.
