Exterior Description And Setting

Attached single-storey rubblestone tin over thatch former dwelling, built c.1800. Rectangular on plan facing west and accessed down a long lane on the south side of Glenkeen Road. Derelict with a two-storey mid twentieth-century house attached to the south gable, also derelict and further roofless rubblestone outbuildings arranged around an informal front yard. Pitched corrugated iron roof with parged cement verges and a pair of rendered chimneystacks to either end. Painted rough cast render over rubblestone walling. Square-headed window openings formed in brick soldier arches and brick reveals with rough-hewn stone sills and some 2/2 timber sash windows. West front elevation is five openings wide with a central door opening. The southernmost window opening has a tripartite timber sash window. Timber lintel and frame to the central door opening. North gable has a single window opening at attic level and exposed rubblestone walls with red brick to the flue. Rubblestone rear elevation with irregularly-placed diminutive square-headed window openings. South gable abutted by two-storey rendered former house, built c.1950, having slates removed and now derelict. Setting: Located at the end of a long lane to the south of Glenkeen Road with an informal front yard enclosed to the north by a range of roofless rubblestone former outbuildings and to the south by a further roofless former diminutive dwelling. Historical Information

The former dwelling house at Glenkeen Road pre-dates the first edition OS map of 1832. The present dwelling is part of a small clachan and valuation records show that by the mid-nineteenth century there were at least three different occupiers on the site. The second edition OS map (1849-53) captions the clachan ‘Glenkeen’ and the third edition of 1904 records that a small orange hall has been built to the south west of the settlement (still present). Griffith’s Valuation (1856-64) lists the tenant of the present property as Jane Gilmore who leased the house and over 17 acres from the Worshipful Company of Ironmongers. The house and offices were valued at £15s. The farm passed down through the Gilmore family who became the owners in fee in 1891. The occupier at the time of the 1901 census was Matthew Gilmore who lived with his wife, three young children and a farm servant in the thatched house which had five rooms and was designated second class. Improvements were made to the building in 1901 resulting in a rise in the valuation to £1 and a new slated house adjoining the original dwelling added a further £2 to the valuation in 1916. Although this house appears to have since been remodelled it remains on the site today. Matthew Gilmore had two more children by 1911 and the census lists the new slated house with six windows to the front elevation, designated first class, suggesting that the new house had been built by 1911 although it was not valued until 1916. Attached single-storey rubblestone tin over thatch lobby-entry former dwelling, built c.1800. Rectangular on plan facing west and accessed down a long lane on the south side of Glenkeen Road. Despite having recognisable elements of a vernacular dwelling with a historic roof structure, this building has lost a considerable amount of its historic fabric amd detailing and is not of sufficient interest to warrant listing.
