Exterior Description And Setting

Detached double-height single-storey stone and brick former school, dated 1849, extensively renovated and converted for use as two dwellings c.2002. This record is for the right hand house - No 74. Pitched natural slate roof with roll moulded black clay ridge tiles and steel roof lights. Decorative pierced timber bargeboards to gable end with cast-iron guttering on iron brackets to exposed rafter feet on overhanging eaves. Random rubblestone walling with redbrick quoins and redbrick surrounds to all openings. Camber-arched redbrick window openings with painted masonry sils and original bipartite Tudor-arched latticed iron windows with original cylinder glass (unless otherwise stated). Front east elevation has gabled entrance porch to the right end (No.74), set below eaves level with natural slate roof, single arched latticed iron window to the gable and square-headed door opening to the south cheek, formed in redbrick with vertically-sheeted timber door. Two camber arched windows to the left and one to the right. Windows have cast iron lattice lights. Front roof has two conservation type roof lights. Rear west elevation, has a replacement hardwood tri-partite window to the left and a central opening recently enlarged to accommodate double-leaf hardwood glazed doors. Gabled north elevation has a central rectangular opening with tripartite Tudor window. Top lights have clear glazing and bottom lights are cast iron lattice pattern. Rear roof has three conservation type roof lights. Setting: Rectangular on plan facing east on the west side of Tullynacross Road on an elevated site. The front elevation is enclosed to Tullynacross Road by dry stone wall and shared wrought-iron gates while the rear and north side elevations have embankments to the lower level of the surrounding terrain. Historical Information

The school was built in 1849 (datestone) and first appears captioned ‘Parochial School’ on the second edition OS map of 1858. A school house is listed in the Townland Valuation (1828-40) in the townland of Ballyskeagh but as Marshall states, ‘this school was closed when the present Lambeg Village School was erected in 1849’. Two schools were built in or around 1849, at the same time as the Parish Church was rebuilt. One, close to the church, was called ‘Lambeg Village School’ and appears initially, at least, to have been for female pupils, and the present building, known as ‘Lambeg School’ was built in Tullynacross townland and catered for male pupils. The decision to build the school was taken at a church vestry meeting and the contributions of ‘the late Marquis of Hertford, of Jonathan Richardson Esq of Glenmore and his family and...the parishioners and others” were gratefully accepted. A Committee was established, as patrons of the school and to appoint staff, which was composed of the Rector and churchwardens, Jonathan Richardson Esq, the Dean of Ross and William Gregg Esq. (Marshall, p.85-9) The two Lambeg Schools are listed in the ‘Return of all Schools in connection with the Board of National Education in Ireland in operation on 21st December 1862’. The patron of Lambeg (male) school is listed as being of the Established Church. George Richardson (Church of Ireland) is the Head and Samuel Diamond (Presbyterian) his Assistant. The school has 190 pupils on the rolls, 89 Church of Ireland, 41 Roman Catholic and 60 Presbyterian. The ‘32nd Report of the Commissioners of National Education in Ireland’ dating from 1865 indicates that, although there were 184 pupils on the rolls in this year, the average daily attendance was 57. The school was initially under the jurisdiction of the Church Education Society but shortly after 1860 it was passed to the National Board of Education. However, according to Marshall it continued to be carefully maintained by Messrs J N Richardson Sons & Owden until 1932 when it was transferred to the Ministry of Education for Northern Ireland. (Marshall, p.88-9) Mr Henry Frazer, principal of the school until 1898 was responsible for the building of the ‘newsroom’ next to the school which is shown (captioned ‘reading room’) on the third edition of the OS map (1902). (Marshall, p.90) In 1946 the school was derequisitioned and presented to the parish by Sir Milne Barbour for use as a Sunday School. It remained in use by the church until at least 1993 but has now been converted for use as two private houses. Lambeg Village School (female) was demolished in 1955. References: Primary Sources 1. Evaluation

Part of a detached double-height single-storey stone and brick former school, dated 1849, renovated and converted for use as two dwellings c.2002. The conversion into two dwellings successfully retained the original fenestration to the front gable while the interior has been largely changed. The picturesque former school substantially retains its original appearance and is an important building in the social history of the area.
