Exterior Description And Setting

A former terrace of two-storey two-bay houses with 6/6 sliding sash windows and harled and whitened walling, now demolished and replaced with a modern housing development. The First Survey card records: ‘Post 1860. Wall Road is fronted by two terraces of houses. The upper terrace comprises ten houses stepped downhill, constructed of whitened brickwork with slated roofs. The houses are in very poor structural condition, the following original features should be recorded. Slate pattern on some roofs, broad boarded sheeted doors, patterned fanlights, two light segmental – headed shop windows. A large number of original fully glazed sash windows remain. Three houses with stone & brick whitened walls and slated roofs remain in the lower terrace, upper D/H windows have full g.b., there are over – large D/H windows on the ground floor, 6 pane in upper sash, 3 pane in lower. Condition precludes preservation. Do not appear on OS map of 1833 or 1860 Appear on OS map of 1903 – 04 Date of visit: 29.9.70’
