Exterior Description And Setting

Detached two-bay single-storey direct-entry thatched vernacular dwelling, built c. 1840, located to the east side of Magherabrack Road. Rectangular direct-entry plan with flat-roofed windbreak porch to south; bed outshot to north; attached byres to east and west. Roof is thatched (partially collapsed) with lime-rendered verges; lime-rendered chimneys. Walls are lime-rendered over rubble construction. Windows are square-headed metal casements supported by stone lintels; all have stone sills. Principal elevation faces south; left bay contains single window; right bay contains single window at right abutted at left by flat-roofed porch with stone canopy containing vertically-sheeted timber entrance door. West gable is abutted by lower rubble byre; exposed section is blank. North elevation contains two windows at right; abutted at left by bed outshot. East gable is abutted by byre. Set perpendicular to road at west; attached rubble byres to east and west have pitched corrugated metal roofs; that to west is further abutted by later lean-to corrugated metal shed. Historical Information

The building first appears on the second edition Ordnance Survey map of 1854. A further house appears nearby on the third edition of 1905. Griffith’s Valuation lists a ‘house, offices and land’ occupied by Michael McAnomey and leased from Daniel Baird. The valuation is 15s, later reduced to 10s. Annual Revisions (1860-1924) amend the name slightly to Michael McAnaney and the property stays in the McAnaney family throughout this period. In 1934 James McAnneny is the owner in fee under land purchase legislation of the early twentieth century. The house is raised in value to £1.5s and 5s for outbuildings. It comprises a kitchen and bedroom and is of rubble masonry and thatch. Dimensions are given for the house and outshot. References: Primary Sources 1. Detached two-bay single-storey direct-entry thatched vernacular dwelling, built c. 1840, located to the east side of Magherabrack Road. The house is built using traditional stone and lime, and retains a wall-hearth, box-bed and a partial thatched roof and supporting structure. The house, although of interest, has lost character due to loss of some of the original fabric and does not meet the criteria for listing.
