Historical Information

The congregation of Broomhedge was formed c. 1890 and met in a number of locations, until the current Gospel Hall was constructed c. 1932-35 (Kelly). Temperance certificates held by the Public Records Office tell us that many of the original members of the congregation joined the Broomhedge Temperance League which was established during the same period (c. 1890). Kelly states that the corrugated iron hall was constructed at a cost of £150. This congregation was originally formed after the visit of David Rea (1845-1916), a travelling evangelist originally from Portadown, to the Broomhedge area in 1879. Throughout its history Broomhedge did not employ a single clergyman but was rather led by a group of unpaid elders (Kelly, p. 94). The 1973 edition of the Ordnance Survey map depicts the church as an oblong structure situated in Upper Broomhedge. Very little alteration has been carried out to the hall since its construction 75 years ago; a rendered rear shed was added sometime after the original construction and replacement uPVC rainwater goods have been installed; however. Evaluation

A plain single-storey, single-bay, gable ended, Gospel Hall built c.1935, located at the road side of a small rural settlement, largely surrounded by agricultural landscape. A good example of a corrugated tin structure, a building type that is becoming increasingly rare in Northern Ireland. The building retains much of its original external character and style and timber panelled interior. Still functioning as a church hall and providing an important role in the local community, It makes an important contribution to the heritage of the area.
