Exterior Description And Setting

Three-storey terrace house of 1879 with rendered façade and relatively plain appearance, now apparently sub-divided into what appears to be three separate properties, with the former return much altered in the process. The building is set on the NW side of Great Georges Street, to the rear (i.e. NE) of the main section of Cloughmore Terrace, SE of Warrenpoint town centre. [The front elevation of the property faces SE, but for the purposes of the following description SE will be given as E.] The front elevation is asymmetrical. To the left on the ground floor is the original entrance which consists of a replacement panelled timber door and semicircular fanlight, both encased by a moulded surround with small ‘keystone’. To the right of the entrance is a (slightly narrow) window with replacement PVC frame. To the first floor are two similar windows, both on a cill course. The window to left has a moulded surround with ‘keystone’. There are two more windows to the second floor, much as before only shorter. The front elevation is finished in painted render, with moulded in-out quoins (though these are missing to the left side at ground floor level), and an eaves course. The S gable is abutted by a separate two-storey property, but the gable is exposed at second floor level, where there is a very small centrally positioned window with what appears to be a single pane [?timber] frame. This gable is finished as the front façade, however there are no quoins to the left (E) side. Just to the right of centre of the ground floor of the N (gabled) elevation there is another doorway, with panelled and glazed timber door with rectangular fanlight and projecting timber hood over. Directly above the doorway (to the first floor) is a window with timber frame and what appears to be a concrete cill (all suggesting that this opening is not original). To the attic level there is a smaller window with similar cill and single panel timber frame. This gable is finished as that to S but without quoins to the right (W) side. The rear (W) façade of the building is abutted by a separate two-storey property which may originally have been a return belonging to the larger building itself. To the ground floor of the W façade (to left of the abutting property) there is a window with two-pane top-hung timber frame and concrete cill. There is a similar (but slightly shorter) window directly above to the first floor and another (with what looks like a PVC frame) to the second floor. To right there is a smaller window, with top-hung timber frame, set at an intermediate level between the first and second floors. The rear is finished as the rest of the building, but does not have any quoins. The roof is gabled and appears to be covered in artificial ‘slate’ (the faces of the roof could only be seen at a distance). The chimneystacks have been removed. The rw goods appear to be a mixture of metal and PVC.

This house was built in 1879 as part of ‘Cloughmore Terrace’, the row of eight properties fronting on to Church Street to the immediate south-west. The valuation book does not supply dimensions for each of the buildings, interestingly however, annotations to the accompanying valuation town plan show no.9 with a projecting bay, in similar fashion to the houses making up the main grouping on Church Street, but this does not appear to have been part of the finished building. The construction of Cloughmore Terrace seems to have been the work of the Bank of Ireland, the bank listed as original the owner of the entire development . The first occupant of no.9 is recorded by the valuers as an Eliza McClelland, who was in residence between 1885 and 1889. Ms McClelland was followed by a long list of relatively short-term tenants including a Thomas Marron (1889-90), Thomas J. McCormick, Edith Godfrey and Vincent Crawford. The freehold of the property was acquired from the Bank of Ireland in 1906 by a James Savage. The house was sub-divided, into what appears to be three properties, c.1980s. One of eight houses in a terrace on Church Street. The terrace has been affected by alterations but is still a significant set piece in the town. There are inappropriate replacement window frames throughout. It has been converted into three flats.
