Exterior Description And Setting

The building has been demolished. The site of the building now consists of a grassy area behind the soldiers’ accommodation. The First Survey card records: ' 2 sty house with attic now used as Officers' Mess. Roof hipped & slated. Chimneys rendered & one mould. Walls rendered, lined & painted. Eaves cornice consoled & panelled frieze, F/Fl. mld. quoins & sill course below which Gr/FL channel jointed with pilaster quoins having triglyph frieze & cornice. Gr/FL sill course & bevel base. S/FL front has two recent square dormers, metal casements. 2 F/FL: D/H windows, horizon astrags, mld architrave & central F/FL D/H window, horizon astrags. 5/C mld architrave & keystone on pilaster jambs with outer plain pilasters supporting decor. brackets below cornice band with frieze. Gr/FL has twin D/H windows, no astrags, plain pilaster jambs & mullion with decor. brackets below cornice hood with frieze. Projecting porch below central window has frieze lintel & eaves cornice with mld. blocking course carried on square corner columns & antae with corner Doric columns framing doorway. This has mld. architrave enclosing plain fanlight & panelled doors approached by 4 steps with side kerbs an square end placks(?) Sides of porch have D/H window, no astrags, 5/C arch head with keystone, mld. architrave shouldered & heeled. NW front has 3 recent dormers& has projecting central bay with Gr/FL arch with frieze, cornice& panelled parapet. Details follow lines of those on S.W. front. Interior has good décor, plaster, marble fireplace & decor. c/iron stair balustrade. Main S.W front about 50Ft. Condition fair. Suggest mid 19c Dtae of visit: 26/7/73'
