Exterior Description And Setting

Detached three-bay two-storey rendered house, built c.1860. Rectangular on plan facing south with two-bay single-storey with attic-storey return and U-plan range of two-storey stone outbuildings forming rear yard. Attached to the east of outbuildings is a double-height stone and redbrick former horse training structure with a double-span barrel roof. Hipped natural slate roof with black clay ridge tiles and lead ridges. Pair of rendered profiled chimneystacks with black clay pots and lead flashing. UPVC rainwater goods to boxed timber eaves. Roof to return is gable-ended with chimneystack and rainwater goods as per main block with pair of flat-roofed dormer windows to the east pitch. Painted ruled-and-lined cement render walling with scribed cement render plinth course and rusticated cement render quoins. Square-headed window openings with architrave surrounds and keystones, painted stone sills and replacement uPVC tripartite sliding sash windows. Symmetrical three-bay front elevation with central square-headed door opening having architrave surround and keystone with replacement timber panelled door flanked by multi-pane sidelights on painted stone sills. Blind west side elevation. Three-bay rear elevation with centrally positioned gable-ended return. Windows to this elevation have no architrave surrounds with 6/6 uPVC sliding sash windows. Timber casement windows to the two dormers and to a pair of diminutive attic-storey openings to the gable. A single 6/6 replacement timber sash window to the east of the return. A rear entrance porch sits to the inner angle on the east side of the return with hipped natural slate roof and vertically-sheeted hardwood door with single light, opening onto raised patio area. Single-bay east elevation has a window opening to the first floor (as per front elevation) with a uPVC conservatory to the ground floor. Setting Set within unspoiled rural landscape with expansive garden to east enclosed by river running south-west, and traditional farmyard to south; the house is accessed from road to west over road bridge with low, roughly coursed rubble drystone parapet walls with flat stone coping. Parallel access to farmyard at north. Multi-bay single and two-storey range of stone and redbrick outbuildings set at an irregular angle to the rear of the house forming a yard on a U-plan. To the northeast elevation (rear) is a large attached stone and redbrick structure (possibly formerly a walled yard), having a double-span barrel roof with wrought-iron tension members and cast-iron compression members supported on steel I-beams with corrugated-iron barrel roofs. Historical Information

This house dates from c.1860 with outbuildings dating from an earlier period. The house in its present form first appears on the third edition OS map of 1906. However there are buildings on the plot from the first edition (1833) and some of these appear to have survived as outbuildings to the present house. The previous building appears in the Townland Valuation and in Griffith’s Valuation where it is listed as a house and 3 offices, with dimensions, and valued at £4. John Buchanan leases it from the Earl of Belmore. In 1862 the house passes to James Buchanan and a marginal note reads ‘improved’, the value being raised from £5.10s to £10. Detached three-bay two-storey rendered house, built c.1860. A solid nineteenth-century house set in grounds with an extensive range of outbuildings which most likely date from an earlier period. This symmetrically-composed house is of some interest but the loss of original fabric and detail has comptromised its worth and it is no longer of special architectural or historic interest.
