Exterior Description And Setting

Attached two-bay single-storey direct-entry vernacular dwelling, built c.1820, located to the north side of Segully Road, Drumquin. Rectangular plan aligned east-west with small windbreak porch to north. Single-storey outbuildings abutting east and west gable walls. Single-storey outbuilding at north built c. 1860. Roof is pitched corrugated metal sheeted with flat stone verges, evidence suggests that the roof has been raised and may have been thatched; roughly coursed rubble gable chimneystacks (later); timber eaves board. Walls are lime washed rubble roughly coursed with patches of lime render in places. Windows are 6/6 timber sliding sashes with exposed boxes and stone cills. Principal elevation faces north and has small windbreak porch off-centre at left; window opening at each side, that at left diminished. Left (east) gable is abutted by slightly higher single-storey outbuilding, detailed as house. Rear (south) elevation has exposed random rubble walling with out-shot at right; exposed section at left has paired 2/2 timber sliding sash windows; single 2/2 window at right. Right (west) gable is abutted by lower single-storey outbuilding; exposed section contains single window at loft level, now partially enclosed by roof structure of adjoining return. East and west returns are detailed similarly to the house; however they have no evidence of previous thatch. East return north elevation has central opening with window at each side; east gable is abutted by single-storey random rubble outbuilding, similarly detailed. Rear elevation is blank. West return north elevation contains central timber-panelled door, timber sheeted door at left and metal casement at right. Rear elevation is blank; west gable contains casement window at ground floor and ventilation opening to apex. Setting Set in a remote rural site with further outbuilding at north (similarly detailed) built c.1860; accessed from lane east. Historical Information

The house is vernacular in plan and seems to date from the early nineteenth-century. The building appears to have originally been thatched. The house is shown on ordnance survey maps from the first edition of 1833. The third edition (1905) shows an outbuilding to the north. The building cannot be identified with any certainty in the Townland Valuation (1828-40), but is listed in Griffith’s Valuation as a house, offices and land valued at 15s and occupied by Francis McNabb. The lessor is the Earl of Castlestuart. In the fieldbook dated 1864-79 the value is raised to £1 and the property passes to the Gormley family. In 1917 the property becomes held ‘in fee’ by the occupiers. Attached two-bay single-storey direct-entry vernacular dwelling, built c.1820, located to the north side of Segully Road, Drumquin. Externally the house remains largely intact in terms of its traditional massing and proportion; the building is well-conceived and is enhanced by its setting. The interior has been partially surveyed and contains original timber sheeted walls, ceiling, and doors. Original brick open fire remains in principal room. Overall, the house remains as an increasingly rare type of traditional rural building.
