Historical Information

A dwelling on the same site as the current building appears on the second edition Ordnance Survey map of 1853, replacing earlier buildings on the site. This appears to have been extended on both the third and fourth editions (1905-6, 1953). Griffith’s Valuation (1856-64) lists a house, offices and land occupied by John McGarvey and leased from W.H Ashe and Robert Stevenson. The buildings are valued at £1.5s. In 1872 the lessors become the Representatives of William H Ashe and Hamilton Thompson. In 1910 the occupier is James McGarvey. By 1933 James McGarvey has become the owner in fee under land purchase legislation of the early twentieth century. The value of the house is subsequently revised to £1.15s and 10s for outbuildings. At this time, it comprises a kitchen, room and p[antry?] on the ground floor and two bedrooms on the first floor. The house is slated. Although there is only a single rise in valuation to this range of buildings, after 1933, it would appear from field inspection and map evidence that the house and outbuildings have undergone a number of changes. It is possible that the house was initially a single-storey dwelling that was raised, incorporating a byre at the west end and was extended to the east by the addition of a further bay, this latter change dating to c.1930. Windows to the rear suggest a possible date of c.1850 as a single-storey dwelling. References: Primary Sources 1. PRONI OS/6/6/12/1 – First Edition OS Map (1832) 2. Evaluation

A detached two-bay two-storey direct-entry vernacular dwelling, built c.1850, located to the south side of Glenchiel Road, with attached two-storey byre. The building displays a two-storey outshot to the rear, an unusual feature in such buildings. Although an interesting 19th century two storey byre dwelling, the loss of original fabric and detailing, detracts from its character and it does not meet the criteria for listing.
