Exterior Description And Setting

Detached three-bay single-storey direct-entry vernacular dwelling, built c.1830, located to the north side of Tattysallagh Road. Direct-entry rectangular plan with small wind-break porch to east and lean-to return to west, added c.1920. Roof is pitched corrugated metal with stone verges; rendered chimney to north; replacement concrete block chimney to centre. Walls are of rubble construction and lime-rendered. Windows are timber framed 2/2 sliding sash with painted masonry sills. Principal elevation faces east; central bay contains single window at right flanked at left by windbreak porch with cat-slide roof containing vertically sheeted timber entrance door surmounted by transom light; left and right bay each contain single window (no sill to left window). South gable is blank; cement rendered. West elevation is abutted at left by lean-to returns containing four windows; exposed section at right is blank. North gable is blank; exposed rubble walling. The house is set perpendicular to the road accessed through lime-rendered walling (abutting south-east corner of house) from lane at south bounded to farmland at east by rubble walling and at west by timber fence; bound to north by hedging. Historical Information

The house is present on the first edition OS map of 1833 but by the third edition of 1905 it appears to have been extended to the north. By the fourth edition of 1937 it has also been extended to the rear. The building is distinctly vernacular in style with simple construction and materials, built in stone with corrugated pitched roof, probably thatched originally, although roof timbers have now been replaced. Field evidence suggests that it was extended by a bay to the north and to the rear with a lean-to extension (to form room G06); originally this was probably a two-bay vernacular dwelling. The house is not identifiable in the Townland Valuation but at the time of Griffith’s Valuation (1856-64) the house is occupied by two tenants separately, although they appear to be from the same family and the two dwellings are valued at 10s and 15s. Part of the current building is described as a ‘workman’s house’. The Kearneys lease the house jointly from William Ogilby Esq. Felix Kearney becomes the owner in fee of part of the building, together with a building to the south of the house in 1907 and there are various changes of occupier in the ‘workman’s house’. In 1934 the plot is still divided into two separate dwellings. However the valuation map for this period shows the current house as one dwelling and the building to the south of the main house as a separate dwelling. Francis Barrett owns the main house in fee, which is valued at £4. It comprises three rooms and a scullery and is built of rubble masonry with a corrugated iron roof. The rear extension appears to be built entirely of corrugated iron at this point. The building to the south is owned by John Kearney Jr. and comprises two rooms and a kitchen. A detached three-bay single-storey direct-entry vernacular dwelling, built c.1830, located to the north side of Tattysallagh Road. The building retains much of its original detailing both externally and internally, including an unusual wall-hearth with stepped detailing, and original windows and doors. Although some replacements have been made, the original form and proportions of this rural dwelling remain intact and are representative of a once-common building type, now increasingly rare. This is a well-preserved developed vernacular house possessing its original detailing and in its original setting.
