Exterior Description And Setting

A single-span stone road-over-river bridge, built c.1850, carrying to Gorticashel Road over the Carnanransy Burn. Rock-faced ashlar spandrels, parapets and wing abutments with stringcourse at parapet base. Round-headed arch sprung from abutments has rock-faced voussoirs and a cement rendered soffit. The single-carriageway bridge is tarmac paved and spans a narrow creek with grassy embankments with some mature trees to west. Walling: Stone / render

Historical Information

The presence of a bridge can be deduced from the road crossing the river on the first edition OS map of 1833. However, the current bridge can be dated stylistically to c.1850. A single-span stone road-over-river bridge, built c.1850, carrying to Gorticashel Road over the Carnanransy Burn. The bridge displays fine masonry and is a visible piece of nineteenth-century industrial heritage. It is one of a series of bridges that remain as a significant remnant of the route and part of the industrial heritage of the district. However, there are other, better, examples listed
