Exterior Description And Setting

Pair of attached three-bay two-storey former houses, now used as single commercial unit, built c.1910, located to the south side of Main Street. Rectangular-on-plan with two-storey flat-roofed extensions to rear linking to storage buildings. Roofs are pitched artificial slate (partly natural slate to rear) with terracotta ridge tiles; roughcast chimney to central party wall. Walls are smooth rendered with banded quoins over painted plinth. Windows are segmental-arched-headed timber-framed 1/1 sliding sash at left and square-headed timber-framed 2/2 sliding sash at right; all have moulded architraves and shared painted masonry sills. Principal elevation faces north-east. At left, central timber panelled entrance door with transom light flanked at left by large square-headed double-leaf vertically-sheeted timber loading doors and at right by large fixed glazed window; three windows at first floor; banded quoins at right. At right, central replacement double-leaf timber panelled glazed entrance doors with transom light flanked at left and right by large timber casement shopfront windows; fluted detail to walling; four windows at first floor with shared sill supported on corbelled brackets. South-east elevation is abutted by 32 Main Street. South-west elevation is abutted by two two-storey flat-roofed extensions; further abutted by single-storey link block to double-height storage warehouse. North-west elevation is abutted by 26 Main Street. Setting:- Building directly accessed from street at north; at south, storage yard to single-storey outbuildings at rear; bounded at rear by timber fence and hedging. Historical Information

The current building first appears on the fourth edition ordnance survey map of 1935 and dates from the early twentieth century. The site is mentioned in Annual Revisions (1860-1929) as a market yard and sheds and is shown on the associated town plan (1905-11) as an open space with buildings to the rear. The current building forms part of a row built to fill in this open space along the street front and is first recorded in 1928 as a garage and workshop owned and occupied by M Daly and valued at £4. In 1934 the building is described as a shop, petrol filling station and offices. There are two petrol tanks and the shop is valued at £15. In 1935 reference is also made to the “gateway entrance at side” which leads to cycle repair shops at the rear. In 1952 Annie Daly (widow) is the occupier and it is noted that she is carrying out renovation work to the premises including conversion of the adjacent building into a dance hall. Michael Daley is listed in the Belfast and Ulster Street Directory for 1924 as a cycle agent. He does not appear in the 1923 edition. References: Primary Sources 1. Evaluation

A pair of attached three-bay two-storey former houses, now used as single commercial unit, built c.1910. While of local interest, the pair are not among the best examples of the type and have been compromised by various alterations and additions.
