Exterior Description And Setting

A single-span road bridge, built c.1850, carrying Laurel Road over Creevan Burn. Squared sandstone rubble piers, abutments, and parapet with rusticated sandstone quoins; rockfaced sandstone string course to carriageway level; squared sandstone rubble coping to parapet; parapet is rounded at north and south ends. Single semi-circular arch with dressed rockfaced voussoirs squared to form spandrels; soffit is coursed rockfaced sandstone. Further small semi-circular flood arch in square-headed recess to north. The carriageway is approximately 5m wide. Bridge is located on rural road to south of junction; land at south bounded to road by timber fence. The bridge first appears on the second edition Ordnance Survey map of 1854 captioned ‘Cavanacaw Bridge’. On the first edition, the road is shown stopping at both sides of the river. A single-span road bridge, built c.1850, carrying Laurel Road over Creevan Burn. This robust sandstone bridge exhibits a range of stonework detailing and ornate dressings, including rubble, rusticated and ashlar stone. The bridge is a good example of the type and reflects the development of infrastructure in the county in the 19th century.
