Exterior Description And Setting

Detached single-cell single-storey early nineteenth century vernacular dwelling, located to the south of Botera Road. Rectangular-on-plan with single-storey wind-break porch to north. Roof is pitched corrugated metal with cat-slide roof over porch (originally thatched); chimney overgrown. Walls are of rubble construction and lime-rendered. Window is timber-framed (window removed). Principal elevation faces north and consists of wind-break porch (door gone) at left flanked at right by single window. East gable is blank. South elevation is blank. West gable is blank. Setting Site directly accessed from road at north; single-storey corrugated metal farm building at west; partially collapsed. Roof Corrugated metal Walling rendered Windows timber RWG N/A

Historical Information

The building is shown on the first edition OS map of 1833. It is not included in the Townland valuation, as it was not deemed of sufficient value. Griffith’s Valuation of 1858 records a ‘house and garden’, which is valued at 8s; the occupier is John McFarland, the property leased from Archibald Ballentine. Valuation Revisions records a change in occupier to Robert Rea in 1901 and a slight increase in valuation to 10s in 1886. No other significant changes are noted. References: Primary Sources 1. Evaluation

A detached single-cell single-storey early nineteenth century vernacular dwelling. This simplest of building forms is constructed of local materials and retains much of its original character, with crude finishes and no ornamentation. While of some interest for the survival of its roof structure, and worthy of record, it is not among the best examples of the type.
