Exterior Description And Setting

Pair of semi-detached two-bay two-and-a-half-storey houses, built c.1895, located to the north side of Campsie Road. Rectangular-on-plan with two-storey gabled returns abutted by further shared one-and-a-half-storey gabled extension to north; canted outer bays at ground floor to south. Roofs are pitched natural slate with crested terracotta ridge tiles over decorative corbelled eaves; corbelled red brick chimneys with clay pots. Walls are Flemish bonded red brick with string courses to window heads and second floor level. Windows are square-headed replacement uPVC casements with carved sandstone lintels and sills; windows to returns and extension have brick voussoirs. Principal elevation faces south; outer bays (bays one and four) each abutted at ground floor by flat-roofed canted bay with decorative corbelled eaves; two windows at first floor; dormer on wall at second floor contains round-arched-headed window with stone sill supported on brick corbels; square brick relief panels. Inner bays (bays two and three) each contain rebated round-arched-headed entrance opening surmounted by shared hood moulds with decorative label stops containing replacement four-panelled timber door with glazed fanlight; each surmounted by single window at first floor. West gable contains single window at ground floor left; two windows at first floor; round-arched-headed window at second floor left; moulded string course at gable mid-point enclosing brick relief motif North elevation is abutted by gabled returns. Left return contains single window at ground floor surmounted by pair of timber casement windows at first floor; abutted at right by extension; east elevation contains replacement timber entrance door flanked at right by window; west elevation abutted by right return. Right return contains replacement timber entrance door flanked by window at left surmounted by two windows at first floor; abutted at left by extension; west elevation contains two windows at ground floor surmounted by single window at first floor right. Gable of extension is blank; east elevation contains two windows at ground floor surmounted by one window at first floor left; west elevation contains, at ground floor, vertically-sheeted timber door flanked by timber framed 2/2 sliding sash window at right; 1/1 sliding sash window at first floor right. East gable contains single window at ground floor right; two windows at first floor; round-arched-headed window at second floor right; moulded string course at gable mid-point enclosing brick relief motif. Setting:- Bounded to road at south by yards enclosed by rendered plinth walling surmounted by steel railings to no. 48 and cast-iron railings to no. 46. To north, pair of two-storey gabled apartments extend at first floor over vehicular access to carpark at rear of site. Historical Information

These are a pair of semi-detached dwellings that first appear on the third edition OS map of 1906. They are entered into Annual Revisions in 1898. The lessor is James Greer. James Kirkpatrick is the occupier and sublets one of the villas to the Misses Gray. They are both valued at £24.15s and 5s for the garden. In 1934 the cost of building each house is estimated by valuers to be £1,065. The occupiers are now James McCauley and John McGale and the lessors James McCauley and the Representatives of James Greer. At this time the houses each comprise a kitchen, scullery, two receptions and one bedroom with one reception, three bedrooms and a bathroom and WC upstairs. The value is raised, post 1934, to £37 each. The outbuildings to the rear of the houses appear to have been built at the same time as the houses themselves and have now been converted into flats. A pair of semi-detached two-bay two-and-a-half-storey houses, built c.1895, located to the north side of Campsie Road. This Victorian pair retains some original detailing externally, displaying ornate brickwork, including hood moulds, string courses and motifs to the principal facade. Although significant in the locale, extensive alterations have compromised its architectural and historic interest.
