Exterior Description And Setting

Detached three-bay single-storey house, built c.1865 on the site of an earlier house, located to the north side of Glennan Road, Omagh. Rectangular-on-plan facing south with central single-storey entrance porch to south and bed outshot to north. Roof is pitched metal sheeted; two smooth rendered corbelled chimneystacks; u-profile cast-iron rainwater goods. Walls are shell clad, (shell pressed into smooth render) with smooth rendered quoins and projecting plinth; windows are now blocked with smooth rendered banding and masonry cills, (2/2 timber sliding sashes remain in east gable). Principal elevation faces south; abutted off-centre at left by single-storey entrance porch with pitched metal sheeted roof. Single window openings at left, two windows at right. Entrance porch south gable contains single window opening. Left cheek contains single window opening; right cheek contains replacement timber door at right. Left (west) gabled contains two windows at first floor. Rear (north) elevation is abutted off-centre at left by single-storey bed outshot; containing three window openings; exposed section is blank. Right (east) gable is detailed as left. The house is accessed by lane from the south; and is situated on a rural farmyard with outbuildings at east, west and south. Outbuildings built c.1830 are traditionally constructed with random rubble walling and metal sheeted roofs, these may have been built at the same time as an earlier house on the site. Historical Information

The current building is shown on the third edition OS map of 1905-6, replacing an earlier building shown on the first edition of 1833. An outbuilding to the west of the plot that is present on the 1833 map appears to have survived. The house is not included in the Townland Valuation, as it would have been below the threshold of £5. Griffith’s Valuation of 1858 records a ‘house, offices and land’, occupied by Joseph Carson and leased from James Sproule. The building valuation is £2.15s. No significant changes are noted in the Valuation Revisions besides changes in occupier name; the last recorded being a William McFarland in 1919. References: Primary Sources 1. Detached three-bay single-storey house, built c.1865, located to the north side of Glennan Road, Omagh. The house is traditional in style and proportion but of a common type The proportions and size of the openings compromise its character and it is not among the best examples of rural vernacular dwellings.
