Exterior Description And Setting

Detached symmetrical three-bay two-storey house, built c.1920, located to the west side of Fireagh Road, Omagh. Rectangular-on-plan facing east with single-storey entrance porch to west and single-storey lean-to extension to south gable. Roof is hipped natural slate, blue/black clay ridge tiles; two brick corbelled party-wall chimneystacks; corbelled eaves supporting replacement uPVC box-profile rainwater goods; walls are roughcast rendered, (stepped quoins at east); windows are square-headed 2/2 timber sliding sashes (camber-headed at east with continuous cill course at first floor) with exposed boxes and projecting stone cills unless otherwise stated. Principal elevation faces east and contains central glazed timber panelled entrance door with camber-headed fanlight over and sidelights; flanked by paired windows at each side with continuous cill; five windows at first floor, (paired at left and right with single window at centre). Entrance door accessed by single masonry step. South elevation is abutted by single-storey mono-pitch extension at left; exposed section contains two windows at first floor. Rear (west) elevation is abutted by single-storey pitched extension at left; exposed section contains three windows right; four windows at first floor. North elevation is blank. West single-storey pitched extension is detailed as main house; west gable contains square-headed uPVC window; left cheek is blank; right cheek contains replacement timber door accessed by three masonry steps and ramp with cast-metal handrail. South mono-pitch extension west elevations is abutted at re-entrant angle projecting gabled by containing single timber casement window; right cheek is blank; exposed section at right is blank. East elevation is blank. South gable abuts outbuilding. Setting The house is accessed by lane from north and south; adjacent outbuilding built c.1830 at north is traditionally constructed with lime rendered random rubble walling, brick surrounds and timber sheeted doors; stone steps to east gable access a loft door at first floor. Historical Information

The building is first shown on the fourth edition OS map of 1937-8, together with outbuildings, although there have been buildings on the plot since at least the first edition (1833). Griffith’s Valuation records previous buildings on the plot as being occupied by Robert White and leased from Alexander G. Stuart Esq The property valuation is £2.5s. Valuation Revisions record a change in occupier to Mary White in 1869, and in 1874 the valuation increases to £3.10s due to the building of new outbuildings. The house can be dated stylistically to c.1920. However, the building of a new house on the plot is not clearly shown in the records until 1933 when the value is raised to £10. The occupier at this time is Robert White in fee and the house comprises a kitchen, scullery and three rooms downstairs with five bedrooms upstairs. It is lit using oil lamps. The valuer describes it as a ‘good house, roughcast exterior finish, good interior, no mod con’. References: Primary Sources 1. Detached symmetrical three-bay two-storey house, built c.1920, located to the west side of Fireagh Road, Omagh. Externally the house remains largely intact in terms of its massing and proportion, however, it is of a late date, poorly proportioned, of a common type and not of special architectural or historic interest.
