Exterior Description And Setting

Attached multi-bay two-storey mill (single-storey at yard to east due to topography of site), built c.1840, located to the south side of Badoney Road. Rectangular-on-plan. Roof is pitched corrugated metal. Walls are whitened random rubble with fieldstone quoins. Windows are timber framed; doors are square-headed vertically-sheeted timber. Principal gable faces east and contains large double-leaf doors (accessing first floor) supported by stone lintel. South elevation contains window door at left; abutted at right by outbuilding. West gable is blank; wall mounted cast-iron waterwheel (in poor repair). North elevation is blank; abutted at left by outbuilding. Setting Complex set perpendicular to road within yard; attached two-storey outbuilding at south (detailed as mill) is largely rebuilt in concrete and contains large double-leaf doors flanked by metal casement window at left to north elevation. At north, flat-roofed rendered link block containing single door connects to gable wall of two-storey outbuilding at north (detailed as mill), built c.1820; east elevation contains single door (accessing first floor) flanked at right by small window opening; north gable contains small window opening supported by timber lintel and with sandstone sill at first floor surmounted by dovecote to loft; west elevation is abutted at ground floor by lean-to containing single door supported by timber lintel, to north elevation; exposed section contains two window openings supported by timber lintels at first floor. Historical Information

The mill is first shown on the second edition OS map of 1852, together with a ‘Mill Stream’. The building to the south adjoining the current building appears on the 1833 map. An outbuilding to the south east of the mill also seems to be present on the first edition. The group is captioned ‘Corn Mill’ throughout all four editions of the OS map. The mill is listed in the Townland Valuation as a corn mill, house and offices occupied by John McGrath and leased from General Archdale. It is valued at £4.17s. Griffith’s Valuation records the plot as a ‘corn mill and kiln’, valued at £8.15s. At a later stage a nearby house is included in the valuation to bring it to £10. The occupier is James Murphy, and the property is leased from Captain Archdale. Valuation Revisions records various changes in occupier but all within the Murphy family; in 1901 the valuation decreases to £5.15s from £10. References: Primary Sources 1. Evaluation

An attached multi-bay two-storey mill building, built c.1840, located to the south side of Badoney Road. The building is of common construction, including rubble stonework and timber lintels. Although the building and attached outbuildings are no longer in use, the waterwheel can still be seen, showing the original function of the complex. While of local interest, it is not among the best examples of the type and has been compromised by various alterations that have reduced its architectural and historic interest.
