Exterior Description And Setting

Detached single-storey, three-bay Italianate gate lodge, built c.1855, to designs of Charles Lanyon. Extended to rear in 1982, in similar style as original construction. T-plan facing south and located to the east of Roguery Road, Toome, at the entrance to Moneyglass House Estate. The roof is pitched natural slate with overhanging eaves supported on profiled brackets with timber painted fascia. Rendered chimney at intersection of both roofs with moulded projection to top surmounted by two octagonal pots. Smooth render walling with plinth and moulded stepped quoins and kneeler stones. Windows are timber painted 2/2 sliding sash unless otherwise stated. The principal elevation is gable ended and fronted by a triple arched portico, with moulded pedestal; archivolts and consoled keystones supported on moulded imposts and with cartouche to apex. Central entrance comprises single leaf timber four-panel door surmounted by semi circular radial glazed timber fanlight, moulded archivolt and consoled keystone supported by pilasters and moulded imposts, all accessed by two stone steps. To each side of the portico is one narrow timber painted sliding sash 2/2 window with projected moulding and deep platform cills supported on square brackets. West gable has central tri-partite timber sliding sash window with projecting window surround, deep cill supported on fluted brackets and central cartouche above window in projecting arch. North elevation is abutted by single storey L-shaped extension of similar style but of no historic significance. East gable is detailed as west and is abutted to the north by the extension. Setting The building is situated at the edge of the Moneyglass estate to the east of the Roguery Road and is accessed by four original sandstone octagonal entrance piers, with deep recessed panels to the shafts and friezes surmounted by stone octagonal pillar caps abutted by the remains of sandstone base where original iron railings once existed; now replaced by a semi circular arc of trees adjoining a further two original deeply vermiculated pillars (As seen also at HB20/01/021E, the original main entrance gate lodge to the Moneyglass estate.) The south pillar has been divided to create two smaller feature pillars for new dwelling to the south. Historical Information

The Gatelodge lies within the eighteenth century Moneyglass demesne, a rural estate owned by the Jones family. Designed by Sir Charles Lanyon c.1855, it became the new main entrance to Moneyglass House (HB20/01/021). The building appears on the second edition OS map of the area, 1857. According to Dean, Kenrick Morres Hamilton-Jones employed Charles Lanyon to design two new gatelodges, the second of which may refer to the rear entrance lodge (HB20/01/21E). An attractive detached single-storey, three-bay Italianate gate lodge, built c.1855, to designs of Charles Lanyon and standing at the west entrance to Moneyglass demesne. The original house fronts a sympathetic extension, original ornamentation and plan form have been well maintained; including triple arched portico, with moulded pedestal, archivolts and consoled keystones supported on moulded imposts and with cartouche to apex. The lodge forms an important feature of the suite of buildings in this large rural estate. A key feature are the original deeply vermiculated gate pillars which can also be found at Duneane Road (HB20/01/021E), the original and principal gate lodge to the Moneyglass estate.
