Exterior Description And Setting

Salt mine worked by traditional pillar-and-stall technique from 19th century until 1920s. Salt extraction by brine solution pumping in 1980s eroded the pillars to such an extent that there was a sudden catastrophic collapse of the mine roof in October 1990. Since then, the area of the resultant surface depression has gradually enlarged and filled with water. Any surviving remains, such as winding gear, are now submerged. In these circumstances, listing is not appropriate.
