Exterior Description And Setting

Description on 15.02.2008 An irregular group of single and 1.5 storey buildings. Generally constructed of very finely cut snecked ashlar stonework with some random rubble construction also. All are gabled and have a mixture of natural and fibre cement slate roofs. The stonework to the ashlar stone buildings is to the highest standard with voussoirs, champhered arises and quoins. The buildings face in two directons. To the SW they are entered through an archway from Edfield Way and are used as storage for the Floral Valley garden centre. At the South of this range is a very fine set of external cantilevered stone steps. To the NE they are accessed from a public pathway that connects Main street and Edfield Way. On this side there is an overhanging roof supported in timber trusses which in turn rest on stone corbels. Description on 28.03.2008 Most of the buildings are demolished. All that remains is a single stone wall with the overhanging roof and trusses.

Historical Information

The shambles or Old Market Yard was built about 1830 by Col Hugh Montgomery. It was to provide a market palce (some with covered space) for the sale of flax, eggs, butter and potatoes. The Old Clabby Road had previously entered the town through the yard. The Market ceased to function with the demise of the town's monthly fairs in the late 1950's. Underneath the shop was a former police station, includinga cell known as the black hole. Secondary sources: Plaque on the wall on the entry from Main Street.

This group of early nineteenth century market buildings was protected with a Building Preservation Notice on the 29th February 2008. Soon afterwards and before a detailed survey could be carried out the buildings were largely demolished. This partial record had been prepared from the material collated prior to the service of the BPN
