Exterior Description And Setting

Detached multi-bay two-storey vernacular farm house, built c.1800, located to the east side of Collin Road. Rectangular-on-plan with single-storey addition to east and small single-storey porch to south; stone steps provide access to first floor. Roof is pitched natural slate; corbelled red brick chimneys with yellow brick diapering. Walls are random rubble with fieldstone quoins. Windows are square-headed timber framed (now blocked or deteriorated) with rubble voussoirs; sandstone sills. Principal elevation faces south; at left, four bays; bay one and three each contain window at each floor; bay two consists of opening on each floor; vertically sheeted timber entrance door at ground floor abutted by flat-roofed windbreak porch; stone steps at left provide access to first floor loading door opening above; bay four contains two windows with red brick surround at ground floor; single window at first floor. At right, square-headed vertically sheeted timber entrance door with transom light is flanked at left by single window and right by two windows at ground floor (left sill missing); four windows at first floor (now blocked). Abutted at right by single-storey addition containing single door and window with shared timber lintel; roofless (remains of roof timbers still evident). West gable contains two square-headed openings at attic level (now blocked); small opening with brick surround at ground floor right. North elevation contains, at left, central square-headed vertically sheeted timber entrance door flanked at ground floor left by two windows with timber lintels and brick surrounds and right by single window (now blocked); single window opening at ground floor centre; at right, square-headed vertically sheeted timber entrance door surmounted by three window openings at first floor; flanked by single window at ground floor left (now blocked). East elevation is blank; abutted at ground floor by addition. Setting Set within rural farm complex; outbuildings to east and west. Site bounded to all sides by rubble walling and mature planting; avenue access from road to west through wrought-iron gate supported by rubble piers; avenue to east; further pairs of rubble piers supporting modern gates to south-east and south of complex. Two-storey rubble outbuilding to west; principal elevation faces east and contains central entrance opening flanked at left and right by window opening; single opening at first floor; all have brick surrounds; abutted at left by corrugated metal walling. South gable is corrugated metal. West elevation is abutted by lean-to addition with catslide roof (now ruin). North elevation contains single window at first floor. Single-storey rubble outbuilding to east; west elevation contains central entrance opening flanked at left by square-headed window; roofless. Historical Information

The building is shown on the first edition OS map of 1832. On the 1857 map it is shown as having two projections on the north east elevation which no longer exist. The property is recorded in the Townland Valuation of 1836 as a ‘house and office’ occupied by John Sharp and the building is valued at £9.8s.5d. Griffith’s Valuation of 1859 records the occupier as John Allen, and the lessor as Robert Walker Esquire. The building is valued at £8. A detached multi-bay two-storey vernacular farm house, built c.1800, located to the east side of Collin Road. The house and outbuildings are currently in a poor state of repair but retain much of their original character and the house displays the traditional direct-entry plan common to vernacular dwellings. The complex remains in its rural setting and contributes to the built heritage of the area. While of local interest, it is not among the best examples of the type and has been compromised by neglect resulting in the loss of much historic detail.
