Exterior Description And Setting

Detached multi-bay two-storey Arts and Crafts style house, built c.1900, located to the west side of Hydepark Road. L-shaped on plan; entrance elevation faces north; garden elevation faces south; lower two-storey return to north-west abutted by further single-storey return and flat-roofed boiler room extension; canted stairwell and single-storey canted porch to re-entrant angle; later single-storey lean-to garden room infill addition to south. Roofs are half-hipped natural slate with overhanging eaves; timber bargeboards; decorative red brick chimneys with concrete coping and replacement clay pots. Walls are Flemish bonded red brick over projecting plinth at ground floor surmounted by corbelled brick string course; splayed diagonal buttresses at corners; painted roughcast at first floor. Windows are replacement square-headed uPVC casements in segmental-headed openings; red brick voussoirs at ground floor; painted masonry sills. Garden elevation is three bays wide; projecting right bay has catslide roof; small square window to west; abutted at ground floor by canted bay containing uPVC windows over red brick apron; leaded flat roof; left and central bays each contain single window at first floor; abutted at ground floor by later garden room addition; timber framed windows over red brick to sill height; central entrance containing replacement uPVC glazed door. West elevation comprises central projecting chimney-breast with four decorative brick label stops supporting vertical angled brick course flanked at ground floor left and right by small square-headed window opening; timber framed casement window at each floor at left; abutted at left by return. Entrance elevation is three bays wide; right bay completely abutted by return; left bay contains single window at each floor; central bay contains single window at first floor left; ground floor abutted by canted porch consisting of timber framed windows with leaded lights over brick apron; timber panelled entrance door with leaded glazed toplights; stairwell has applied half-timber boarding at first floor; pair of stepped stairwell windows to each elevation; single timber framed window to ground floor at north. East elevation comprises central projecting chimney-breast (detailed as west) flanked at left and right by window at first floor; roof catslides at left covering further small square window at first floor left; single window at ground floor left. Return East elevation is abutted on left by stairwell; exposed section contains two windows at ground floor and single window at first floor; continuous brick pier at corner rising to chimney. Abutted at right by single-storey return containing single window at left. West elevation contains two windows at ground floor; two windows at first floor right. Abutted at left by boiler room containing square-headed timber sheeted door. North elevation is blank with projecting chimney-breast at left and modern chimney-breast at right; abutted at ground floor by single-storey return containing single window (no sill) and boiler room containing square-headed timber sheeted door. Setting Set within mature gardens bounded on all sides by hedging; access to east through double decorative wrought-iron gates supported by pair of square brick piers connected by swan-neck walling to outer piers. Several modern rendered bungalows surround house in grounds. Evaluation

A detached multi-bay two-storey Arts and Crafts style house, built c.1900, located to the west side of Hydepark Road. The house and site have been altered in more recent years, to its detriment, i.e.; replacement windows, modern garden room and boiler room, and additional dwellings on site. The house retains much of its original character through delicate brickwork detailing, ornate chimneys and a decorative canted porch and stairwell which enliven an otherwise plain façade. However, it is not of the top flight of Edwardian buildings and not listworthy.
