Exterior Description And Setting

Detached three-bay two-storey late Victorian house, built c.1890, and located to the north side of Raw Brae Road, Carrickfergus. Rectangular-on-plan with two-storey return to rear; single-storey extension to east gable with flat roof. Roof is pitched natural slate with blue/black clay ridge tiles; three roof lights to north face, deep overhanging eaves; plain bargeboards to eaves. Smooth rendered gable chimneystacks with terracotta pots. Ogee-profile cast-iron rainwater goods (replacement cast-metal to rear.) Walls are ruled-and-lined rendered with raised stepped chamfered quoins and smooth rendered plinth. Windows are segmental headed 1/1 timber sliding sashes with margin lights within moulded surrounds and having painted masonry cills unless otherwise stated. Principal elevation faces south and contains central entrance; window to right; canted bay with flat roof to left; three windows at first floor, each contained in wall-head dormers with decorative carved bargeboards and finials. Entrance comprises a four-panelled timber door with margined stained glass sidelights and fanlight recessed within channeled pilasters rising to segmental-headed moulded archivolt and keyblock. Canted bay contains window to each cheek; continuous cill and moulded cornice detail. Left gable contains single window to left at ground floor; two windows at first floor. Rear elevation is abutted to centre by a two-storey return (detailed as main block;) Single window at first floor to right and left exposed sections. (Stepped quoin detail does not continue to rear elevation.) Right gable is abutted by extension at ground floor with flat roof; exposed section has two windows at first floor. Return north gable has rendered chimney detailed as main block; single 2/2 sliding sash window at first floor (with no moulded surround detail.) West elevation has two windows at ground floor; replacement timber casement to left, 1/1 timber sliding sash to right (without margin lights.) Two windows at first floor (with no moulded surround detail.) East elevation has single window at first floor; Extension south elevation contains window to left (as main block without moulded surround.) Diagonally sheeted timber garage door to right. East elevation is blank. Set parallel to the road the house is preserved within its original
setting; accessed by lane along east boundary through alcoved entrance walls and cast-iron gates supported square smooth rendered piers with pyramidal caps. Historical Information

The building is first shown on the third edition OS map of 1902. A previous smaller building is shown on the first and second edition maps of 1832 and 1857 respectively. Valuation Revisions record the previous property as a “house, office and land”, the owner is Isaac Creighton, and the lessor Robert Harte, with the building valued at £0.15s. Detached three-bay two-storey late Victorian house, built c.1890, and located to the north side of Raw Brae Road, Carrickfergus. Well proportioned and detailed with decoratively carved bargeboards and segmental-headed moulded window surrounds. This late Victorian house remains largely unaltered and stands out as one of the most significant rural buildings in the Whitehead area.
